Local baseball has always been an essential part of Maine’s historical and cultural landscape, yet up until now, very little information has been preserved from this era or about its players and teams. My book, When Towns Had Teams, offers a unique look back at a time when town team and semi-pro baseball was the central focus in communities up and down the state.

Containing 40 interviews, detailed research and a commitment to capturing the stories of men who played the local game of baseball, 40, 50, and 60 years ago in Maine, When Town Had Teams brings back to life a time that had been relegated to scrapbooks and yellowed news clippings.

For 14 months, The Portland Pigeon provided greater Portland with a muckraking publication that dared to tell the truth about the comings and goings of the city. With a staff populated by several Salt Institute graduates, The Pigeon was truly Portland’s “alternative” monthly. Here are several articles, opinion pieces and other stories about the people of Portland. The article I wrote about Portland’s professional baseball team should have been written by Portland’s daily newspaper, or the state’s so-called business paper. Instead, it was left to me to fashion an article about professional sports being a dubious economic development tool.
